Q&A With Rising Star Bailey Howe

BD Specialist, Kramer Levin

Bailey Howe recently started a new role as BD Specialist at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP in NYC. Less than two weeks after we began working with her in April 2020, she received an offer from the Firm.
Calibrate: As you were thinking about next steps in your career, what were some characteristics that a law firm needed to possess in order to pique your interest?

Bailey: I was looking to join a strong, supportive and motivating business development team. I wanted to work in a firm where business development is an integral part of the firm.

Calibrate: You began your new role at Kramer during the pandemic and, as such, the entire recruiting and onboarding process was virtual. With respect to the interview process, given that you didn’t go into the firm’s offices or meet any of your potential new co-workers in person, what was it about them/the process that made you feel comfortable enough to accept the offer?

Bailey: The Zoom interviews were very helpful. I also enjoyed the final interview with some of my team members where there was no set agenda, but a general conversational to get to know each other better. We discussed interests, such as books and hobbies. That gave me more of an idea of who my potential team members were on a personal level.

Calibrate: In thinking about the onboarding process, what parts of the process stood out as noteworthy?  Anything that happened during the process that was different than an in-person onboarding experience from your perspective (other than it being virtual)?

Bailey: The help desk was extremely supportive. I called them multiple times in the first few days for assistance and they were ready to jump on and explain anything. Having the resources available along with clear instructions has made the virtual onboarding experience easier and smoother.

Calibrate: Now that you’ve been in the role, what have been some of the challenges of working virtually that you’ve had to overcome?

Bailey: Honestly, it’s been a very smooth process so far. Developing relationships virtually is more difficult as I can’t just pop into someone’s office to introduce myself, but I met many people over Zoom and on various calls and my team has made sure I am very involved. I am looking forward to eventually going back into the office and developing relationships in person.

Calibrate: What are some factors that you can point to that have attributed to your success in the role so far?

Bailey: Communication is key. Making myself available and being eager to take on any task has helped me to learn about the firm and to acclimate myself. Having the support of my manager has been extremely valuable. She really opened the doors between myself and the lawyers, making sure I am building relationships, and am heard and involved.

Calibrate: Do you have any advice for anyone who may be thinking it’s time to move to a new firm?

Bailey: Take the risk! There is no reward without risk. It may be a daunting time to move to a new firm but it can definitely be more than worth it.
